The National Council of the Order of Physicians (CNOM) launched a survey of all doctors and “junior doctors” on gender-based and sexual violence suffered in the professional context, the results of which will be published at the end of 2024. This investigation follows the wave of testimonies and reactions from doctors, interns and other caregivers that occurred in the spring, in the wake of the #metoo movement.

All doctors registered with the order and all junior doctors – interns in their last phase of training – will receive a questionnaire by e-mail, guaranteeing their anonymity, and will be able to respond until October 14, reports the CNOM in a press release. This shipment will thus concern approximately 285,000 professionals and interns, the order specified.

“Measuring the extent of the phenomenon”

With CNOM “encourages all doctors” to answer to have the most data “reliable and representative” possible. The results “will make it possible to measure the extent of the phenomenon, to identify the most frequent types of violence and the contexts in which they occur”in order to “to guide actions to combat sexist and sexual violence”he writes.

In April, the revelations of infectious disease specialist Karine Lacombe, who accused emergency physician Patrick Pelloux of harassment, triggered a multitude of reactions and testimonies, on social networks and among professional and student associations, on sexist violence and sexuality in the healthcare environment.

Many caregivers denounced a « culture carabine » et « patriarchal » installed particularly in hospitals, and a tradition of secrecy favorable to sexist and sexual violence. The former Minister of Health, Frédéric Valletoux, led consultations and announced several measures at the end of May, including the implementation of training for all staff.
