Video of tornado near Velen online

VELEN/CHER. There is a video on various social media sites of a tornado that was spotted in the Velen and Hochmoor area on Wednesday evening. The video shows a wind gust moving behind a wind turbine. Various weather services also show this video. However, the fire department has no information. There were no operations and no damage was reported, reports district spokeswoman Anna-Maria Levers from the fire department’s control center: “We can neither confirm nor deny that.”

The tornado was probably seen east of Velen near Hochmoor. According to the head of the Gescher fire department, the video may actually have been taken in that area. In terms of location, it fits in with the raised moor area.

Patrick Uebbing, head of the Velen fire department, also reported no action on Wednesday evening. He wasn’t aware of any damage either: “I haven’t heard anything.” He only heard about the tornado report the next morning.

The tornado mapping service Torkud reports the suspected case in Velen, but also speaks of other incidents in North Rhine-Westphalia, including in Wallach. There is also said to have been damage. However, Torkud still classifies these as unconfirmed suspected cases.

The Velen fire department had a different mission on Thursday morning. The message “oil on water” then turned out to be mud, reports Uebbing.

“We can neither confirm nor deny that.”
