“kulturMontag” on September 30th: New “Joker” film with Lady Gaga, encouraging hope put to the test, 75 years of Jeunesse

The “kulturMontag” presented by Peter Schneeberger on September 30, 2024 at 10:45 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON will, among other things, present the new “Joker” film adaptation, which will soon be released in cinemas, with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role and newcomer Lady Gaga as his amour fou, also deals with the abstract theme of hope, on which several books will be published in the fall, and honors the anniversary of the Jeunesse organization, which has been a leading music organizer and supporter of children and young people in Austria for 75 years. Following the magazine, a new edition of the cultural documentary series “Places of Childhood” (11.30 p.m.) is on the program, in which actor and writer Miguel Herz-Kestranek takes us to his hometown of St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee and thus to his origins.

Bold mix – The new “Joker” with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the cinema

The “Joker” is back. Five years after the global success of director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, the second part about the iconic villain is now coming to cinemas. The sequel “Folie à Deux” – in German “Madness for Two” – turns out to be a psychological study with profoundly indulgent musical interludes. No wonder, as the powerful-voiced Lady Gaga can be seen alongside the Oscar-winning leading actor. The film received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. The first “Joker” made its mark in the history of the festival in 2019, completely unexpectedly. The unusual comic film adaptation about the dazzling antagonist from the Batman universe even won the Golden Lion in the prestigious competition, and Joker leading actor Joaquin Phoenix was awarded the Oscar. “Folie à Deux” is a musical mixture of prison and court drama, enriched with a love story that promises to be an amour fou. In his psychological study, Todd Phillips once again digs deeper into the traumatic past of his protagonist and skillfully juggles between brutal prison life, courtroom drama and the psychopath relationship between the Joker and his adored Harleen Quinzel. Pop icon Lady Gaga fits perfectly into the dark world of Gotham City. “kulturMontag” met the star for an interview.

Encouraging hope – about confidence in times of crisis

Hope is not for pessimists, nor is it for optimists. And yet she stays alive, is everywhere and has a dubious reputation. It can be rejected for opposite reasons, believing that it is the opiate that makes people resign themselves to fate instead of taking life into their own hands. Or because they are seen as poison that encourages people to do just that. It is a contradictory matter. One thing is certain: no one can escape hope, even in a world marked by war, crises and environmental destruction that offers little reason for rays of hope. The fact that several books on the subject will be published this fall could be seen as a sign of the times. So what does hope mean to people? The renowned German classical philologist Jonas Grethlein addresses this question in his new book “Hoffnung. A Story of Confidence from Homer to Climate Change. Peter Schneeberger discusses live in the studio with the philosopher and author Franz Schuh whether hope is a delusion of the soul or a source of strength that has an impact beyond the individual.

Everything is different – 75 years of “Jeunesse – Austrian Musical Youth”

75 years and not a bit quiet – the Jeunesse Austria. This institution was founded in Paris after the end of the Second World War to give young people a new perspective through music after the catastrophes of fascism and atrocities. A branch in Vienna was opened in November 1949 with a concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. Jeunesse is now firmly established in 45 countries worldwide and is the largest NGO for young musicians. Even after 75 years, she remains true to her motto of developing music across all borders. From classical to world music, from contemporary to pop and urban jazz: Jeunesse – Austrian Musical Youth is one of the country’s leading music organizers with its wide-ranging program. The platform has always been committed to a young audience and to promoting young talents, giving them professional performance opportunities throughout Austria at the beginning of their careers. It was the starting point for international careers of, for example, Friedrich Gulda, Alfred Brendel and Franz Welser-Möst. Under the new Secretary General Birgit Hinterholzer, the non-profit organization has undertaken fundamental change. The aim is to offer young people from all backgrounds the same opportunities, for example at summer camps in which children from warring countries were also on board. They now want to celebrate the anniversary in an opulent and exuberant manner. Under the motto “Music creates peace”, the birthday weekend in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier is dedicated to limitless musical encounters and is all about community, tolerance and democracy.

Documentary “Places of Childhood – Miguel Herz-Kestranek” (11.30 p.m.)

In the “Places of Childhood” series, cultural presenter Peter Schneeberger accompanies artists back to their origins. On a journey into the past, where anecdotal and poetic stories are told, this time he accompanies the Austrian actor and writer Miguel Herz-Kestranek to the place of his childhood: Lake Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut.
St. Gilgen was his home, the bay his adventure playground, the lake his sailing area. Even today, St. Gilgen is still Herz-Kestranek’s refuge and place of longing whenever he cannot be there. If he has to leave Lake Wolfgangsee, he immediately becomes homesick.
One would think that anyone who grows up in such a beautiful place can only be a lucky child, but Miguel Herz-Kestranek’s childhood and youth only seem carefree from the outside and are marked by strokes of fate, despair and disappointments – many of which he was only able to understand as an adult and process. The parents had met in exile in Uruguay, and back in Austria he was the longed-for child, but the family’s happiness only lasted a few years. After his parents separated, the boy Miguel stayed with his father and rarely saw his mother and little sister.
He was a smart, sensitive, artistically gifted child who enjoyed listening to the conversations and discussions of adults, observing them, imitating them and writing poems and articles for the school newspaper at an early age. He has positive memories of his primary school days, but his subsequent school career was a disaster and his time at boarding school was torture.
In a conversation with Peter Schneeberger, Miguel Herz-Kestranek talks about his first, innocent kiss when he fell in love with Clark Gable’s daughter as a ten-year-old. Why he didn’t have a good relationship with food as a child, how he escaped with his father’s sailing boat, why then as now he loved being on the water but not in the water – and how he developed an irrepressible ability to survive and curiosity from the blows of fate in his youth has.
