Agia Aquilina

Agia Akylina came from the village of Zagliveri in Thessaloniki and was raised by pious parents. Her father, however, killed a Turk, after a fight with him. To avoid the death penalty, he accepted Islam. But her mother remained steadfast in Christ and every day taught Aquilina virtue and faith. Despite her father’s persistent efforts and the threats of the Turks, Akylina did not deny Christ. When she was led to martyrdom, her mother followed her, who urged her to it. Aquilina courageously controlled the Turks and their religion, as a result of which she died a martyr’s death, after several days of caning, on September 27, 1764 AD. at the age of 19.

No one knows where her fellow villagers deposited her honorable remains. It is said that the Turks wanted to make her theirs even dead, that’s why they ordered to bury Saint Aquilina in the Turkish cemetery that was near the mosque in order to satisfy their unquenchable selfishness. That’s how it happened. But the divine light, which like a star came down from the sky and stood over her grave, was the point that obliged her Christian compatriots to steal her body and bury it somewhere where it would be safe. According to tradition, the names of these daring people were Tsoplas, Kalimeris and Bouklas, who are said to have taken an oath never to reveal the secret to anyone, because there would be the fear that her holy relic would be found in the hands of the Turks. Many Christians have since passed away in sorrow to worship her holy relics. Today it has been built in honor of Pericalli and a magnificent Holy Church which, however, remains incomplete without the blessing of her holy relics.
