To shorten the route to the taxi, an American family of four walked across the tracks. The father was hit by a train and killed.

Unterhaching – A tragedy occurred on Thursday at 9:10 p.m. on the railway line in Unterhaching. A family from San Francisco, father, mother and two adult children, walked across the train tracks at Grünwalder Weg 8 to get to their ordered Uber ride. The father, who was last in line, was hit by a train and fatally injured. It is not clear whether the family came from the Oktoberfest or was even in Munich for the Oktoberfest. They may also have lost their bearings and wanted to have the transport service take them to their hotel in Unterhaching.

Father (76) hit by train in front of his family and fatally injured

According to the police, the family had called the transport service and arranged the meeting point on Jahnstrasse, on the other side of the railway line. Instead of walking the 100 meters from Grünwalder Weg to the underpass at the train station, the Americans, who were unfamiliar with the area, decided to walk across the tracks. The mother (71), daughter (33) and son (32) managed to get over it – but the father (76) was hit by a train in front of his family and fatally injured.

Crisis intervention team looks after traumatized family and train driver

A large contingent of rescue workers were on duty, including emergency services, fire departments and police. Also the crisis intervention team that took care of the traumatized family and the train driver. The railway line was closed for two hours.

The federal police are also dismayed by the accident. One can only warn again and again not to cross the tracks. “You can’t hear the trains.”
