Cyprus: Britain sends troops ahead of “mass evacuation” of Lebanon

The government said in a statement late Tuesday that 700 troops would travel to Cyprus, boosting its presence in the region where it already has two Royal Navy ships, aircraft and transport helicopters.
“The events of the past hours and days have shown how volatile this situation is, so our message is clear, British nationals must leave now,” Defense Secretary John Healy said.
“Our government is ensuring that all preparations are in place to support British nationals should the situation worsen,” the British minister added.

Fierce fighting this week between Israel and Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah has raised fears that nearly a year of conflict will explode and destabilize the Middle East, where war is already raging between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.
Starmer said he was very concerned that the area was getting out of hand.
“All parties must pull back from the brink,” he told LBC radio. “I’m obviously going to New York to the UN General Assembly to talk to colleagues and allies, but my message will be a ceasefire. Pull back from the cliff edge. De-escalate the situation.”
Israel’s attack since Monday morning has killed 569 people, according to Reuters, including 50 children, and wounded 1,835 in Lebanon, Health Minister Firas Abyad said.
Thousands of displaced people who fled southern Lebanon were sheltering in schools and other buildings.
