The president of the 5 Star Movement Giuseppe Conte and the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein do not greet each other and keep at a safe distance. The occasion is the delivery by the “wide field” of the signatures to ask for the referendum to repeal differentiated autonomy. If there is broad convergence on this point, the conflict is instead over the renewal of the 4 members chosen by Parliament of the Rai Board of Directors. Avs and M5S go to the vote while the Democratic Party abstains.
“On Rai there has been no change on our part – says Conte – We have always been consistent. We are with Avs and I don’t understand why the Democratic Party made this decision, which I respect. The Board of Directors of a company that carries out a public service must be dutifully manned by the opposition. The split occurred on the part of the Democratic Party which decided it with Renzi after making the 2015 reform. Whoever creates the Aventine should do so for the management and for the newspapers. We expect a consistent Pd after decades of different direction that it has given to Rai up to now. When we talk about armchairs we talk about surveillance and warheads. The Board of Directors is a control and supervisory body.”
The response from the Dem was equally cold. “A split on our part?”, replies Schlein, “on Rai we remained on the position that was held by all the oppositions until yesterday. At most you have to ask others why they changed their position. We remain consistent. The Media freedom act is already in vigor and as I said at the beginning of my mandate as secretary Giorgia Meloni will be the last prime minister who divides up Rai”.
