Why ban the use of Russian and Chinese parts in modern vehicles?

A proposal to ban the use of hardware and software from China and Russia in the production of modern auto-driving vehicles has come forward in the United States based on security.

U.S. officials say there are concerns that the technology used in the production of self-driving vehicles could connect the vehicles to other networks and give an adversary the power to control vehicles on American roads.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said that the ban was planned on a targeted and proactive basis in view of U.S. security and safety. As other connected technologies are used, it is not difficult to understand how easily any foreign intruder could gain access to this information and pose a threat to national security and the personal privacy of American citizens.

Officials said the restrictions would likely apply from 2027, while the hardware ban would be implemented three years after that to give auto companies more time to get their affairs in order, following the U.S. move. In their response, Chinese officials said that the US is unfairly targeting Chinese companies by exaggerating national security.
