Hurricane Warning for western Cuba and Florida (+ trajectory cone)

At dawn on September 24, the National Hurricane Center in Miami launched a Hurricane alert for the western coast of Cuba and Florida, due to the possible formation of Tropical Storm number 9.

According to the tropical cyclone warning, at 5:00 am today, Tuesday, hurricane and storm surge watches are issued for parts of the Florida Gulf Coast, including the coasts of Pinar del Río in Cuba.

Location of the weather phenomenon at that time: 18.9N, 83.0W. 195 km west of Grand Cayman and 390 km south-southeast of the western point of Cuba.
– Maximum sustained winds: 55 km/h (35 mph)
– Current movement: Northwest at 13 km/h (8 mph)
– Minimum central pressure**: 1001 mb (29.56 inches)

The NHC details the following alerts and warnings with the possible Hurricane. Storm surge warning from Indian Pass, FL to Bonita Beach, FL, including Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor.
– Hurricane watch from Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay.
– Tropical storm warning, from Indian Pass to the Walton/Bay county line, and from Bonita Beach to Englewood.

Storm surge warning in effect: Indian Pass to Flamingo, Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor.
Hurricane warning: Englewood to Indian Pass, Tampa Bay, Cabo Catoche to Tulum (Mexico), Province of Pinar del Río (Cuba).
Tropical Storm Warning: Grand Cayman, Río Lagartos to Tulum (Mexico), Artemisa, Pinar del Río and the Isle of Youth (Cuba).
Tropical Storm Watch: Dry Tortugas, Lower Keys, Flamingo to Englewood, Indian Pass to Walton/Bay county line.

At 5:00 AM EDT, the disturbance was located in the northwest Caribbean Sea, moving northwest at 13 km/h.

The system is expected to strengthen and become a hurricane this Wednesday, reaching greater intensity on Thursday as it moves toward the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The chances of development over the next 48 hours and 7 days are high, close to 100%.

Interests in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and the west coast of Florida should monitor this system.
