A Kashmiri youth who travels 12 kilometers to dump garbage

Like countries around the world, Pakistan too Environmental pollution And Climate change is facing problems arising from, in this case under the administration of Pakistan Kashmir capital of Muzaffarabad A young man has started a campaign to dispose ‘used diapers’.

The aim of Imran Mehmood’s campaign is to keep the natural water resources clean and eliminate pollution in the area.

According to Imran Mehmood, used baby diapers are thrown openly in drains and natural water courses in rural areas.

Diapers take hundreds of years to decompose compared to normal waste, due to these same used diapers causing threats to the natural environment and also polluting clean water.

The young man not only encouraged people in his village to dispose of ‘used diapers’ in their homes instead of throwing them openly, but also to rid the surrounding villages of this hazardous waste. It is committed to protect the natural environment and water from pollution

Imran Mehmood, a resident of Dara Batangi, a village at the foot of a hill, twelve kilometers away from Muzaffarabad, is fighting to protect his environment and the water passing through his village from being polluted. The major competition is from ‘used diapers’.

Imran started the process of making his village free of diapers and plastic 10 years ago from his home.

Their village is situated on the top of a mountain surrounded by several springs whose water flows through the mountain and flows down the slope towards the settlements in the foothills.

These communities depend on this water for drinking and consumption. By throwing diapers and garbage in these waters, these waters and springs were being polluted, which was continuously affecting the population using the water beyond this village.

Imran Mehmood initially tried to burn diapers, plastic from his native house where Imran lives with his family, but it is not possible to burn diapers because it does not catch fire after use.

Imran also tried to bury these diapers by digging a pit, but by plowing the fields, they would come back to the surface of the ground, while the expiry date of these diapers is also hundreds of years.

Finally, Imran decided to take these diapers to Muzaffarabad, a city 12 km away from his village, where he dumped the used diapers and garbage in a garbage bin set up by the municipality.

Twice a week, Imran Mehmood travels on his motorcycle to reach Muzaffarabad through an arduous route, putting the used diapers and plastic eco-friendly shopping bags in his house into ‘biodegradable shopping bags’.

Where they throw this waste in the garbage bins made by the municipality.

Imran Mehmood, after starting this process from his home, convinced his neighborhood friends and then the villagers to put used diapers in eco-friendly shopping bags instead of throwing them in natural waterways in Muzaffarabad. If it is put in the garbage bins installed by the municipality, it will not only keep the natural environment of the area clean, but also prevent their natural water sources from getting polluted.

After being encouraged by Imran Mehmood, almost all the people of his village, instead of throwing the used diapers and garbage of the house in open or in the water channels, loaded them on cars or motorcycles and went to the nearest city of Muzaffarabad or Garhi Habibullah to the municipality. They throw it in the garbage bins.

Now Imran also encourages not to use ‘plastic shopping bags’ in his area.

Imran and his friends are now bringing their daily shopping for salaf, vegetables, etc. in cloth bags instead of plastic shopping bags so that the use of shopping bags in their area can be minimized and people can avoid plastic shopping. Can be persuaded to use eco-friendly shopping bags or cloth bags instead of bags.

Imran Mehmood is now also informing the residents of other villages adjacent to his village to keep their environment clean and protect the waters from pollution.

Imran Mahmood says that there is no arrangement for disposal of waste like used diapers and plastic in the rural areas, in the future when the population of the villages will increase, the generation of waste will also increase.

In the future, Imran wishes that there should be a government-level plan in his area and such a project should be carried out that not only destroys this waste, but also reproduces it and makes it usable as an alternative.

Most of Pakistan-administered Kashmir consists of rural areas, but the government has no alternative system for disposing of waste in rural areas.

Due to the absence of this system, the beautiful natural environment and natural water reserves in the rural areas are being affected.
