Meta presents its first prototype of smart augmented reality glasses

New York, Sep 25 (EFE).- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday unveiled Orion, the first “fully functional” prototype of augmented reality smart glasses, a technology that the Facebook co-founder described as “the most advanced glasses in the world.”

The device, which is not yet ready for market, is very similar to traditional glasses: they are wireless, weigh “less than 100 grams,” have “holographic screens” in the lenses and a “neural bracelet” that allows a signal to be sent from the user’s brain to the device.

“For now, I think the right way to look at Orion is as a time machine. These glasses exist. They’re amazing and they’re a glimpse into a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting,” Zuckerberg said at the company’s Meta Connect developer event, which is being held today and tomorrow at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

The glasses do not require a phone or laptop to work, but they do require a wireless computer drive that cannot be more than 4 meters away.

Meta expects Orion to hit the market “in a few years” at a price comparable to today’s phones and laptops, according to The Verge.

To indicate just how valuable the gadget is, the glasses were brought onto the stage inside a briefcase strapped to an employee’s wrist. According to The Verge, this first prototype is priced at around $10,000 per unit.

Zuckerberg said one of his favorite things to do is see people’s surprised faces when they try out the glasses for video calls or playing video games.

He then shared a video of the reactions, which featured several tech personalities, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

More and “better” AI everywhere

Orion also has the same type of generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities as Meta’s current Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Regarding Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Zuckerberg announced new software updates on Wednesday, such as reminder functions, video tips and real-time voice translation.

To illustrate this last point, Zuckerberg had a conversation with Mexican mixed martial arts champion Brandon Moreno. Thanks to the glasses, they were able to understand each other even though one was speaking in English and the other in Spanish.

Zuckerberg described the demonstration as a success, but the translation, while quick and understandable, was far from perfect.

Just two months after releasing its latest major AI model, Meta today announced Llama 3.2, its first open-source model capable of processing both images and text.

Chatbots with celebrity voices and a more realistic metaverse

The tech giant announced that, starting today in the United States, its users will be able to receive responses from its virtual assistant with the voices of celebrities generated with Artificial Intelligence, and this will be available on Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

Some of those mentioned were rapper and actress Awkwafina, actor John Cena, actor Keegan-Michael Key and actress Kristen Bell.

Despite not achieving the success he had promised, Zuckerberg continues to bet on the Horizon Worlds Metaverse and today announced the possibility of participating in hyper-realistic “universes” – which members can create by scanning a room with a phone – and jumping from one to another through portals.
