A new artistic accent was presented on Laisvės avenue in Kaunas – the light installation “Liep”

On the evening of October 12th, the artistic light installation “Liepa” was lit on the facade of the building numbered 18 located on Laisvės avenue, to the sound of a musical composition by the composer Patrios Židelevičius, inspired by the sounds of Kaunas’s Laisvės avenue.

The tree, which has become an inseparable part of the city landscape for most Kaunas residents, has become a new, noticeable and dynamic accent of Kaunas’ most important pedestrian street.

The installation was created by the artist Kotryna Čalkaitė.

According to the creator, light objects change the perception of space at night, stimulate the imagination, and, finally, give the viewer the opportunity to see the environment in an everyday way.

“Most of my light installations are very colorful, bright, contrasting, with many details. This one is completely different – warm white color, refined forms, minimalistic, organically blending into the urban space. I am very happy that this project will be long-term,” the artist said in a press release.

“It is not only a composition that is stylistically in perfect harmony with the building, but also the meaning of the legendary symbol of Laisvės Alley and the continuity of history. We hope that the eternal light of the work of art will allow us to share joy, optimism, and positive emotions with the citizens,” agreed Donatas Miškinis, one of the creators of the idea, co-owner of the real estate company “Etapas Group”.

Last year’s project “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022” also encouraged the implementation of this initiative, thus continuing the changes that have been started and preserving the intensified cultural rhythm.

The sustainability, lasting and aesthetic value of the work were the main points that the designers of the project focused on.

The forms of the installation echo the forms of the vertical, horizontal and diagonal elements of the house itself, while at the same time giving the facade life and dynamism with its stained-glass windows. The object’s functionality was also relevant – in the cold period of the year, when there is little sunlight and the trees drop their leaves, the installation will create cozy lighting in the city.

The “Kaunas 2022” sign is symbolically embedded in the installation – the work of art is inspired by the theme of the project and the logo, which was created by designers, architects Rokas Sutkaitis and Julius Seniūnas.

According to the former head of Kaunas 2022 Virginijas Vitkienė, it is extremely gratifying to see how an installation inspired by the project settles in the city for a long time.

“Nothing ends: neither festivals, nor community initiatives, not even business partnerships,” V.Vitkienė assured.
