Greg Monroe joins Pelicans coaching staff

Greg Monroe is returning to the NBA. The former center for the Detroit Pistons — among other teams — has agreed to a deal to join the coaching staff of the New Orleans Pelicans, a franchise where he will take on a player development role; reports Christian Clark of Le New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The 7th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Monroe finished his career averaging 13 points and 8.2 rebounds in 646 games played. In such a career, he has played for the Pistons, Bucks, Suns, Celtics, Raptors, Sixers, Timberwolves, Wizards and Jazz, with his last appearance coming in the 2021-22 season, a campaign in which he played for as many as four teams between December and April.

Monroe joining the Pelicans is no surprise, as he hails from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and spent his high school years in New Orleans. In case any clues were missing, he recently commented on The Times-Picayune who lives in Metairie, the town where the Pelicans’ practice facilities are located.

Given his playing career, it’s likely he’ll play a prominent role in helping develop the interior players, as well as helping other elements of the team develop moves in the paint.
