Eric Adams the one hundred and tenth mayor of New Yorkwas charged after a lengthy investigation into corruption and on foreign fund transfers conducted by US federal authorities. The 64enne Adams became the first sitting mayor in the city’s history to be formally impeached for criminal offences.

The indictment was not immediately made public, nor were the specific crimes charged revealed. But they could be announced by the federal prosecutor’s office in the next few hours.

Adams, in a statement and a video, has proclaimed his innocence and said he will defend himself against “completely false” charges. He has shown no signs of resigning, despite growing calls for his exit from his own Democratic Party. Among the critics, the popular congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
