After the teachers’ union announced a break in the strike, the wave of strikers recedes

According to the information system of education management, 1,083 education workers went on strike in Lithuania on Friday, including 944 teachers or 2.53 percent. of all Lithuanian teachers.

On Thursday, 1,758 educators went on strike, including 1,526 teachers.

A.Navick’s trade union announced on Thursday that it will suspend the strike until November 22, and then resume the protest, in order to influence the Seimas, which will vote on next year’s state budget, to increase the salaries of teachers more than the Government proposes.

The strike will not be formally called off, but the union leadership is urging teachers to return to work.

“It’s normal, because only yesterday evening we made the decision not to actively continue the strike,” A. Navickas told BNS on Friday, when asked to comment on the latest statistics.

According to him, on Thursday, most of the striking teachers were in the capital and returned home late, so they did not have time to inform their managers that they would return to work.

“They will probably do that today, and we think all or most of the teachers will return on Monday,” said the head of the union.

The teachers’ strike, which lasted for almost two weeks, took place, among other reasons, due to a disagreement with the Government about how much teachers’ salaries should increase next year.

The government proposes in the next year’s state budget to provide for the growth of teachers’ wages in two stages: from January – 10 percent, and a similar proportion from September – so that the average teacher’s salary reaches 130 percent. average national wage. In the next year’s budget, over 387 million will be additionally allocated for the implementation of the education agreement. euros.

A. Navick’s trade union has recently called for two 15 percent salary increases – from January and from September. The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (SMSM) reiterates that it does not have the financial means to offer more funds to raise teachers’ salaries at a faster pace.

At that time, four trade unions of education workers signed a collective agreement of the education and science branch with ŠMSM last week. Two weeks ago, they agreed to prepare a plan by May of next year, how the salary for teachers will be increased after 2024, and they also approved the Government’s proposal for a salary increase next year.
