Strong winds and torrential rain are expected in France on the afternoon of Friday, September 25. Aitor, the first storm of the fall, is expected to last until Friday.

This Wednesday, September 25, marks the arrival of storm Aitor in France, which should last until Friday. This atmospheric river, a sort of long corridor loaded with humidity, comes from the Antilles and should reach France in the coming days.

Ludovic Lagrange, forecaster at Weather Solutions, explains: “Generally speaking, we expect up to 50 mm of water in France. But locally, due to the relief effect, on the exposed foothills of the Massif Central, the Jura or the Alps, we can get up to 100 mm of water, that is to say the equivalent, approximately, of a month of rain.”

This natural phenomenon is in fact today accentuated by global warming: the global rise in temperatures leads to greater evaporation from the oceans.

In some regions such as Charente-Maritime, where the soil is already saturated with water, this new precipitation could cause flooding.
