Volcano erupts in Indonesia – Area evacuated

Volcano in the north Indonesia exploded on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday causing hundreds of residents of the area to leave their homes.

“Based on visual indications and instrument readings, which show an increase in volcanic activity, the alert level on Mount Ruang has been raised from 3 to 4,” said Hendra Gunawan, the director of Indonesia’s Volcanology Service.

The authorities also expanded the evacuation zonefrom four to six kilometers around the crater.

The Ruang Volcanoin the northeastern part of Kelevi, reaches a height of 725 meters. The first explosion occurred at 21:45 local time on Tuesday, followed by two more in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

No casualties were reported, however 800 people were evacuated from two villages on Ruang Island and were taken to a neighboring island, Indonesian news agency Antara reported.

It should be noted that Indonesia is located on the Pacific Rim of Fire, where the continental plates collide, causing significant volcanic and seismic activity. Indonesia has almost 130 active volcanoes.
