The North Sumatra (Sumut) contingent fulfilled the target set for the 21st Aceh-Sumut National Sports Week (PON) in 2024, by placing in the top four in the medal tally.

“North Sumatra was able to break into the top four in the medal tally with 79 gold, 59 silver and 116 bronze. This also fulfilled the target that was previously set,” said North Sumatra KONI Chairman John Ismadi Lubis in Medan, Saturday (21/9), as reported by Between.

He said the target was able to be met by the athletes competing in this four-yearly sporting event. In PON 2024, North Sumatra appeared in 57 sports out of a total of 64 sports competed.

“In PON 2024, we won 79 gold, 59 silver and 116 bronze. Our target is the top 5, but the provincial government’s target is the top 4,” said John.

He said that the success in entering the top four was inseparable from the hard work of the athletes who had been training as hard as possible, and there were even a number of sports branches that conducted trials abroad.

“This is the struggle of our athletes, and many of them were unexpected. On average, the medals won came from sports that have always been a priority,” he said.

“In terms of ranking, North Sumatra can meet the target of the top four. But if we talk about the gold medal target, it has not been met because the actual target was 100 golds but only got 79 golds,” he said.

He said that from the 79 gold medals won by the North Sumatra contingent, several sports were able to secure overall champion status. The achievement of the overall champion of this sport, he said, was also beyond prediction.

“There are 4 overall champion sports, drumband 7 golds, Barongsai 4 golds, Dance we can win 5 gold medals. Then, bowling with 4 gold medals,” he said.
