The European Parliament calls for stricter implementation of EU sanctions against Russia

In the resolution adopted on Thursday, MEPs are concerned about the decreasing effectiveness of EU sanctions against Russia and the existing loopholes. MEPs are worried that EU sanctions against Russia, including oil sanctions, are being observed extremely poorly.

The EP resolution expresses great concern about the ongoing trade between EU countries and Russia, especially in goods needed for military aggression, which are subject to sanctions, and about reports that Azerbaijan and other countries are falsifying data on the origin of Russian gas.

MEPs note that the EU remains one of Russia’s largest fossil fuel customers due to continuous imports of pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as various exemptions to the ban on the import of crude oil and petroleum products.

In a non-binding resolution, the EP called for strengthening and centralizing the supervision of the implementation of sanctions at the EU level and creating a mechanism for the prevention and monitoring of sanctions evasion. They propose to completely close the EU market to fossil fuels from Russia.

The EP also called on the EU and its member states to find legal ways to confiscate frozen Russian assets and use them for the reconstruction of Ukraine and compensation for the victims of Russian aggression.
