Umarkot blasphemy: death in alleged police encounter, protest rally of thousands of people

The participants raised slogans to bring justice to the heirs of Dr. Shah Nawaz and against the growing religious extremism in Sindh. He demanded the establishment of a judicial inquiry commission and demanded that the police officers involved in the incident be terminated and prosecuted.

Nine of the 34 accused named in the case filed against the incident on Tuesday were produced before the Anti-Terrorism Court Mirpur Khas, where the court handed them over to the police on seven-day physical remand.

What was the incident of Dr. Shah Nawaz and what has happened so far?

A case of blasphemy was registered against 40-year-old Dr. Shahnawaz, a resident of Jahenro village in Umarkot, on September 17 in the presence of the imam of the local mosque. Dr. Shah Nawaz was an 18th grade civil servant at Umarkot Civil Hospital. He was fired by the hospital’s MS after the lawsuit.

After the case was registered, a video statement of Dr. Shahnawaz appeared on social media, in which he explained that the Facebook profile from which the insulting content was posted was not his but an old ID, which was They don’t use “Let the police, FIA or Rangers do their work, everything will become clear,” he said.

On the intervening night of September 18 and 19, he was reported dead in an alleged police encounter in Sindhri police station limits of Mirpurkhas district. Earlier on September 17 and 18, angry people staged violent protests against the blasphemy incident in Umarkot, in which police mobiles were set on fire and Dr. Shah Nawaz’s private clinic was vandalized.

After the death of Dr. Shahnawaz, videos of police officers being garlanded by various people emerged, on which social media users slammed the police. Sindh Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hassan-ul-Najjar suspended several police officers over the incident.

During a joint press conference at the Karachi Press Club on September 21, human rights activists termed the Mirpurkhas police encounter as ‘fake’ and demanded a judicial commission rejecting the inquiry committee formed by the Sindh Interior Ministry. He also demanded registration of murder case against DIG Mirpur Khas and other officers involved.

On September 22, hundreds of people from different cities, including nationalist leaders, social activists and Sufi artists, reached Dr. Shahnawaz’s village Jahinro. He recited Fatiha along with the family of Dr. Shah Nawaz and found out the details of the incident.

After that, everyone reached the burial site of Dr. Shah Nawaz’s half-burnt body, where people offered funeral prayers and offered prayers. On this occasion, Manjhi Faqir also sang Sufi verses, while people showered flowers and offered ajrak on the grave.
