Actress Demi Moore, 61, has recalled how she used to be trapped by negative body image and shared some unhealthy weight loss habits.

In a segment on CBS Sunday Morning last Sunday (9/22), Moore talked about the “crazy” things she did to her body to meet the beauty standards of the time.

“I put a lot of pressure on myself. I’ve had experiences of being told to lose weight and stuff, and as embarrassing as it may be, that’s what I put myself through,” Moore told host Tracy Smith, as reported by People, Tuesday (9/24).

Moore revealed she began filming Indecent Proposal (1993) shortly after her daughter, Scout Willis, was born in 1991. To lose post-pregnancy weight, she rode her bike to and from work every day, a distance of about 60 miles or about 97 kilometers.

“I think[Scout]was five or six months old when we shot. I fed her all night, got up in the dark with a trainer with a headlamp, rode my bike all the way to Paramount, even to the set, and then shot all day, usually 12 hours a day, and so on,” he said.

“Even thinking about what I did to my body seems so crazy, so ridiculous. When you look back and think, ‘Did it really matter?’ It probably didn’t, but at the time I made it mean everything,” Moore said.

He added that currently, his self-image is fluctuating but his mental state is much better.

“The difference now is, I can hold myself back. I can say, ‘Yeah, I don’t like the loose skin, but you know, it is what it is. So I’m going to make the most of what I have instead of chasing what I don’t have,’” she said.

Earlier this September, in an interview with The Guardian, Moore opened up about the body image and self-judgment explored in her new film The Substance.

Addressing expectations about women’s bodies in the 90s, the actress said that women were not considered attractive unless they were skinny at the time.

“What I did to myself, what I meant about myself, looking at that ‘violence,’ how cruel we are to ourselves, how brutal,” he said.

According to her, judging oneself, pursuing perfection, trying to free oneself from shortcomings, and feeling rejected and hopeless, all of these are not exclusive to women.

“All of us, if we start to think that our value is only determined by our appearance, then eventually we will be destroyed,” he said.

Moore said that currently, society is living in a time of great judgment when people can anonymously judge each other in a cruel way.

In her latest film, The Substance, released in May, Moore plays Elisabeth, who tries a black market drug to create a younger version of herself.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the film, which also stars Margaret Qualley, explores topics including body image and society’s expectations of women and aging.

The film won the best screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. (Z-1)
