Abbas Halabi, Minister of Education and Higher Education of the caretaker government, met with the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office, Dr. Costanza Farina, and a delegation of senior officials of the Office, in the presence of the Director-General of UNESCO and the Minister of Education, Imad Mr. Al-Ashqar, Ramza Jaber, Advisor to the Minister on UNESCO Affairs, and the team from the Minister’s Office.
The study examines the current situation in the education sector and how assistance is provided and its areas.
The UNESCO delegation presented the contribution that UNESCO can provide in line with the Ministry’s priorities, in particular with regard to urgent needs, coordination between partners and donors, as well as re-planning projects and directing them in line with the Ministry’s requirements Possibilities in Educational Services.
Minister Halabi thanked UNESCO for the initiative and informed the audience about the current situation, which currently includes 295 public schools in all regions of Lebanon hosting displaced persons, with approximately 31,500 displaced persons having been accommodated so far. He highlighted the importance of collecting data and understanding where students and teachers were displaced and whether the schools hosting them had electricity, water and internet.
He also mentioned “daily administrative meetings with education centers and appropriate coordination with the private education sector”.
Many ideas and alternatives are presented based on fact-based scenarios.
The Minister thanked the UNESCO Office for its interest in coordination and agreed to continue the meeting.
This was followed by a workshop based on the work of the Ministry’s Education Crisis Team and those involved in education.

In a separate case, Minister Al-Halabi filed a lawsuit with the Beirut Appeal Prosecutor’s Office, accusing Mr. Abdel Majeed Al-Mahbani of impersonating the Chairman of the Parents’ Council Union, as well as initiating defamation, slander and defamation. Calling on parents not to contribute to the funds of the school’s Parents’ Council, which is formally established and funded by law, he called for prosecution and trial.
