Cúcuta | Venezuelans will be included in the facial recognition system

Cúcuta has been the focus of the border security issue in recent weeks, presenting different criminal acts that have forced extraordinary Security Councils at the regional and national level.

Cúcuta, September 23, 2023.- After the different meetings and extraordinary security councils held in Cúcuta, the different measures that will be implemented to strengthen the security issue were announced, among them the inclusion of Venezuelans in the facial recognition system that will operate in the capital of Norte de Santander.

The mayor of Cúcuta, Jorge Acevedo, announced this and other security measures that will be implemented in the city in the coming days, after the security council held over the weekend with the presence of the Minister of the Interior, the Director of Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the Governor’s Office and the mayors of the metropolitan area of ​​Cúcuta. “The security of Cúcuta is being strengthened through the implementation of new security cameras. We had already been working with the ministry to bring to Cúcuta around 250 LPR cameras, which record license plates.”

Around 28% of the population in Cúcuta is Venezuelan

Mayor Jorge Acevedo assured that at least 28% of the population of Cúcuta are Venezuelans who emigrated to the neighboring country, and it is estimated that around 226,901 people in Colombia are Venezuelans carrying the PEP who, within the framework of the Temporary Protection Statute for Venezuelan Migrants (ETPV), had the obligation to register in the Single Registry of Venezuelan Migrants (RUMV) before April 30, 2023 and did not do so.

The mayor pointed out that the security system that will be installed will have cameras equipped with artificial intelligence for face identification and assured that data from Migración Colombia will be used. “They have software that has more than 5 million faces of Venezuelans identified,” and mentioned that the data of the Venezuelan population will include Venezuelans who live in Cúcuta or who are part of the pendular migration and will be updated gradually once the cameras are installed.
