Russia: End Adoptions to Countries Allowing Sex Change – Move Necessary for ‘Traditional Values’

After all, Russia itself last year imposed a ban on gender reassignment, either legally or medically, as part of a broader crackdown on the rights of the LGBTI+ community.

The legislation on adoptions, which had already been theoretically approved by the government, today won the support of the State Duma (lower house) in the first of three readings.

The bill’s authors see it as a measure aimed at protecting adopted children of Russian descent from what they say are potentially dangerous conditions in NATO member countries that are supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia.

“This decision aims to protect childhood and traditional values. It is necessary to protect our children from the dangers they may face if they are adopted or given up for foster care to citizens of foreign countries where gender reassignment is allowed,” State Duma Speaker and close ally of President Vladimir Putin, Vyacheslav Volodin, said after the vote.
