There’s a Sad Story Behind the Making of Feby Putri’s Song Duration

Singer Feby Putri (MI/Rifaldi Putra Irianto)

FOR indie folk music lovers, the singer Feby Putri must be familiar. The woman from Makassar is recorded as having produced a number of hit songs, such as Kembali Pulang, Runtuh, and Halu.

Recently, Feby released a new musical work titled Durasi in collaboration with Kapal Udara. The song will also be included in Feby’s latest album titled Hitam Putih which will be released on September 26.

But perhaps not many people know that the song Durasi has a great meaning for Feby. The 24-year-old singer also stated that the song was one of the songs with the most difficult creation process out of the 10 other songs on the Hitam Putih album.

“The most difficult of all the songs on the Hitam Putih album is the song Durasi. So this song was actually produced around August or October 2023 if I’m not mistaken. My mother has always been waiting for the Makassar language in my songs and finally I inserted it in the song Durasi. Initially, I created this song to surprise my mother, but it turned out that my mother had to pass away,” said Feby in Jakarta, Monday (23/9).

Feby explained that when her mother passed away, the song Durasi was still in the process of workshop and music recording, not yet in the vocal recording process. So when the vocal recording process was taking place, Feby admitted that it was the most difficult part because she always remembered her mother.

“So when I was doing the workshop and the music recording process (Durasi), my mother was still there. Meanwhile, the vocal take process was after my mother was no longer there. So that was quite difficult to do,” said Feby.

Regarding the meaning of the song Durasi, the singer who won the 2022 Ami Awards for the song Runtuh said that the song tells the story of a migrant returning to his hometown.

Taking a story from her personal experience, Feby said how she saw many changes in her mother after not seeing her for a long time.

“The first time when I was taken away to go abroad, I felt that my mother’s body was still full, but when I returned to my hometown, my mother’s body was no longer full. Then the first time I felt like my mother’s hair was not that white when I returned to my hometown, her hair had already turned white,” explained Feby.

The Makassar language lyrics contained in the song are ‘Punna tena kisipainga motere ri boritta’ which means ‘when we do not remind each other to return to the village, then we will see significant changes’. (M-3)
