From check-ups to assessments – For health reasons

In the 1970s, health insurance companies offered free check-ups to their members with the sole aim of retaining their loyalty. No one came out unscathed from these check-ups, which revealed all the risk factors likely to cause serious illnesses. Their time of onset was an unknown factor that was intended to encourage citizens not to deprive themselves of their health insurance until the possible occurrence of these illnesses. As the saying goes: “insurance only seems expensive before the accident.”

In our country, where serious illnesses are 100% covered by national solidarity, no one has pointed out that the total cost of minor ailments spread over a lifetime is most often lower than that of all insurance premiums. Faced with such contradictory arithmetic, mutual insurance companies would have argued the exorbitant cost of various dental, ocular and hearing prostheses, without specifying that this exorbitance followed a curve parallel to that of their premiums.

Those who doubt this arithmetic of profit should note the remarkable preeminence of health mutuals in all advertising spaces and their inclusion in the financial sector of banks. A collusion familiarly called ass and shirt.

Today, it is Social Security that is in turn offering a health check-up called a “health prevention examination”. Let us happily salute the word “prevention” which brings the nobility that was missing from these ancient check-ups.

Alas, I fear I must propose an arithmetic even more contradictory than that which never took place.

The brains of Western doctors are formatted by industry, and more than 90% of their consultations are limited to examining a biological “anomaly” and prescribing medications that can prevent fatal consequences. Particularly in our country, a big consumer of useless chemicals. Let us doubt that these new assessments, although covered in republican gold, will succeed in eliminating prescriptions if we do not first change the method of financing health professionals.

Having failed to understand and disseminate the basic rules of prevention and having thoughtlessly promoted, including on public service channels, tablets likely to resolve problems of obesity, depression, hypertension, hyperactivity, osteoporosis or memory, these assessments can only aggravate the drug waste.

The cost of their administrative management will be added to that of the induced prescriptions and their share of iatrogenic diseases. The administration will refrain, as always, from evaluating the total financial and health cost. And at a time when our abysmal debt is going to generate new psychosocial pathologies, we could have refrained from this vain demagogy.

Although I am not a rebel, I dare to ask myself if there is a pilot in the health plane and the ministries that should be involved in it.
