Russia among the three leading countries.. Developing an ion quantum computer with a capacity of “50 qubits”

This is within the framework of implementing the roadmap for developing the field of high-tech “quantum computing”, and in coordination with the state nuclear corporation “Rosatom”.

According to the Director General of Rosatom State Corporation Alexei Likhachev, the development of a 50-qubit quantum computer means that Russia has become one of the world leaders in the field of quantum technologies. “This is the result of the efforts of Russian scientists within the framework of the Quantum Computing Roadmap coordinated by Rosatom. This qubit rate reflects the systematic development of quantum technologies in our country, where universities and academic institutions work in concert. Special expertise has been formed, an educational program has been launched to train specialists in schools and universities. As a result, only three countries, including Russia, have quantum computers on four priority platforms – superconductors, ions, neutral atoms and photons. This is being done in order to ensure our technological leadership in the future,” he said. “The next step is the practical application of quantum computers in order to improve the living conditions of our people and make our economy develop at a new high and qualitative pace.”

The ion platform, which is a key element of the quantum ion processor, was presented to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Monday, September 23, by Nikolai Kolachevsky, director of the Lebedev Physical Institute, on the sidelines of the Microelectronics 2024 forum. The quantum computer developed is based on the unique KODEET technology, which Russian scientists began to use after Austria and the United States. Currently, the world quantum computer on the ion platform with a capacity of 50 qubits is the most powerful quantum computer in Russia. It is accessed via a cloud platform through which basic quantum algorithms can be run.

It is noteworthy that the Russian quantum computer was first presented to the Russian President in July 2023 at the First Future Technologies Forum. It is a computer operating with 16 qubits. At the Second Future Technologies Forum in February 2023, a quantum computer with 20 qubits was unveiled. In less than a year, scientists were able to double the number of qubits to 50.

Quantinuum’s 56-qubit quantum computer is the world’s most powerful. Only six countries, including Russia, currently have ion quantum computers with a capacity of more than 50 qubits.
