Aristotle taught us that all human beings strive for knowledge. But there is a catch to this time-honored idea, according to British philosopher Sir Roger Scruton. Aristotle forgot to mention that people’s thirst for knowledge only lasts as long as “they are assured that knowledge will confirm them.” People turn away from uncomfortable truths and build walls “to shield themselves from them,” said the professor, who died in 2020.
