Appeals against the decision of NAB amendments have been set for hearing in the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of Pakistan has constituted a five-member larger bench to hear the appeals. A five-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa will hear the case on October 31.
Other members of the larger bench include Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Mandukhel, Justice Athar Minullah and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi.
It should be remembered that in front of a 3-member special bench headed by former Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandial, Imran Khan challenged the NAB amendments introduced by the former government led by then Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in 2022.
In September this year, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had declared a safe decision on the petition filed by former Prime Minister and Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Imran Khan against the NAB amendments and declared several clauses null and void.
In its decision, the Supreme Court had reinstated corruption cases against public officials, while NAB was allowed to investigate corruption cases worth less than Rs 50 crore.
The decision has re-authorized the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to crack down on politicians and influential figures involved in white-collar crimes of less than Rs 50 crore and about 1,800 closed cases will now be reopened.
A month after the verdict, the caretaker federal government had challenged the Supreme Court’s September 15 verdict regarding the NAB amendments declaring the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) illegal.
Apart from this, next week’s cause list and judges’ roster for Islamabad principal seat of the Supreme Court has been released, in which five bench cases will be heard on the principal seat next week.
