Meta, Snapchat and TikTok launch “Thrive”: Program to combat harmful content and save lives

On social media, it is always known that it has been one of the factors that has influenced younger generations to adopt new habits that can harm their health.

To address this problem, social networks, Meta, Snapchat y TikTok have joined forces with the Mental Health Coalition to launch Thrivean innovative program designed to limit the dissemination of such content online.

What is Thrive?

Thrive seeks to establish a collaborative signal exchange system between technological platforms.

This program will be able to share information with companies about content that violates rules related to suicide and self-harm.

This will facilitate a coordinated response to address problematic content that may appear on different platforms.

How does it work?

This technology enables the secure exchange of signals about content depicting graphic images of suicide or self-harm.

Thrive members will be able to collect information about content involving self-harm and receive alerts about content that raises concerns or violates their policies, the MHC says. From there, they will be able to independently assess whether they should take action.

Between April and June of this year, Meta reports the removal of more than 12 million pieces of suicide and self-harm content on Facebook e Instagram.

While the platform allows for discussions about personal experiences related to these topics, steps have been taken to make such content harder to find.

He Dr. Dan ReidenbergCEO of Thrive, described the project as an important step forward in interdisciplinary collaboration and public protection in a global mental health crisis.
