Minister Van den Brandt: “We should have this every month”
Outgoing Brussels Minister of Mobility Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) can of course not stay away from Car Free Sunday. She is cycling along with ‘Kidical Mass’, a cycling tour with children to ask for safe cycling infrastructure.
“It is a beautiful day, like every time,” Van den Brandt responds to BRUZZ. “We should have a car-free Sunday every month. I also put that proposal on the table two years ago, but the time was not yet ripe for it in politics. I hope that we will continue to fight for it. And that people realize how fantastic this is, for the city, for air quality, for our children… And that it is also possible,” Van den Brandt thinks.
Furthermore, the Minister of Mobility is particularly enjoying an incident-free Car-Free Sunday. “As far as I know, there have been no major accidents so far, and everything is going well. It has stayed dry, which we were afraid of for a while. Even the weather gods are kind to Car-Free Sunday.”
“I’m glad I can cycle along with all those children. It’s Kidical Mass regularly, but today it’s extra magical in that quiet car-free city,” says Van den Brandt about the bike ride she’s taking part in.
The Kidical Mass is a bike ride for children, with the aim of encouraging more children (and parents) to ride a bike, according to the organizers of the campaign. These rides are organized on Sunday afternoons in 16 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region. According to the organization, some 4,500 parents and children took part last year.
