This is the appeal of five local carnival troupes who fear losing the party for which their members spend a large part of their free time preparing for.
Namely the carnival’s international parade, where international and local troupes perform carnival art and street theater in a procession through Aalborg. In the first carnival years, the parade was part of the big popular and drunken carnival procession, but in recent years the serious carnival groups have had their own procession a week before.
The fear is quite real.
In any case, the management of the Aalborg Carnival Association has plans to drop the international parade, and those thoughts are part of the agenda when the association holds its annual general meeting on Wednesday.
The reason is simple enough. Carnival also lacks money.
The international parade costs – according to the association – between 800,000 and one million kroner to complete, and that expense can no longer be afforded after Aalborg municipality has removed a subsidy of half a million kroner.
– I am also proud of the International Parade, but I have to have something to pay for it with, and there is no one standing in line to pay for it, says Jeanett Kaare, head of development and spokesperson for Aalborg Karneval.
So far, no sponsor has signed up, and therefore it seems that 2024 was the last time with the international parade.
It’s a shame for the dancers, who deserve great praise for their efforts, and it’s a shame for those who enjoyed watching.
The sad carnival groups are right that without their contribution the carnival will lose a dimension.
There is undeniably not very elegant samba over a bunch of drunk smurfs who can barely steer the shopping cart with Breezes, and the overall expression inevitably becomes less Rio and more provincial.
But the carnival in Aalborg is first and foremost a colossal city party, and if no rich uncle shows up, there is not much to do.
In any case, a new municipal grant should not come into question – the municipality has plenty to spend the money on in advance.
