Colombian Senate approved recognizing Edmundo González as president-elect of Venezuela

• The senators emphasized that this measure is in response to “the true will of the Venezuelan people.”

The Colombian Senate has approved a proposal to recognize Edmundo González as the legitimate winner of the July 28 elections in Venezuela.

The news was announced by Senator Miguel Uribe on his X account on Tuesday, September 24.

“We request that the government recognize the figure of the legitimate winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela, Edmundo González, who represents the true will of the Venezuelan people,” the document states in part.

So far, the government of Gustavo Petro has not recognized the victory of any candidate and has insisted on the publication of the electoral records in Venezuela.

What does the Colombian Senate’s measure entail?

With this proposal, the legislative body urges Colombian President Gustavo Petro to recognize González’s victory.

“I am pleased that today, the Colombian Senate is in tune with world democracy. We join the congresses that defend democracy and freedom,” said Senator Miguel Uribe in his statements.

She also condemned the persecution of Edmundo González and recognized his bravery, as well as that of opposition leader María Corina Machado.

“He, Maria Corina and millions of Venezuelans have bravely shown us that resigning ourselves to defending democracy and freedom is not an option; they deserve our support,” he added.

Recognition of Edmundo González’s victory

Congresses and senates of several countries have recognized the electoral “victory” of Edmundo González. For example, on September 11, Congress of Spain approved the recognition of the opposition as “elected and legitimate president of Venezuela.”

The decision of the Spanish Congress was approved with 177 votes in favor, 164 against and one abstention. The parliamentarians voted for a proposition of the Popular Party (PP) to urge the Spanish government to recognise González. The decision is not binding and has symbolic value.

For its part, the European Parliament On September 19, the European Parliament recognized Edmundo González as the legitimate and democratically elected president of Venezuela, in a non-binding text that was approved with the yes of the European People’s Party, the ultraconservatives and the right.

The resolution, approved with 309 votes in favor, 201 against and 12 abstentions, also recognizes Maria Corina Machado as leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela.

On September 21, Ben Cardin, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced that he will introduce a bill to recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as the winner of the Venezuelan elections and sanction the government of Nicolás Maduro.
