The number of family doctor positions that will be available in Quebec announced this year is increasing again, from 449 for 2024 to 458 for 2025.
On Tuesday, Health Minister Christian Dubé unveiled in a press release the new plans for 2025, which aim to distribute family medicine medical staff “geographically and equitably” across all regions of Quebec.
Thus, there will be 95 positions open in Montreal, 66 in Montérégie, 33 in the Laurentians, 30 in the Capitale-Nationale, 27 in Mauricie–Centre-du-Québec, 24 in Estrie and 21 in Lanaudière.
In order to “relax and review” the system for assigning positions to new doctors, Quebec has announced the establishment of an intensive working group. Representatives from the Ministry of Health and Social Services, regional departments of general medicine and the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) will be part of it.
Regional departments of general medicine, which are responsible for allocating new doctor positions, will also now benefit from two-year planning instead of one year, the minister also said. “They will get more predictability and flexibility,” he said.
A “simplification of the administrative process” will also allow these departments to obtain faster responses from the Ministry of Health regarding their various requests. “This will help reduce current delays, which can sometimes result in candidates withdrawing and accepting an offer elsewhere in the meantime,” Mr. Dubé’s office wrote in the press release.
Like last year, new doctors will be able to apply in two regions and two sub-regions of their choice. They will also be able to indicate their preference for specific medical activities. This involves about ten hours that they will have to devote each week in a CHSLD or elsewhere, depending on local needs.
“False good news”
For the FMOQ, Tuesday’s announcement by the Legault government is “false good news.” “The problem is not the number of positions, but the number of students who choose family medicine,” says Stéphane Gosselin, spokesperson for the Federation.
Last year, 78 positions for new family doctors were not filled, according to the FMOQ.
According to Mr. Gosselin, with a shortage of more than 1,500 family doctors in Quebec, it is therefore more important to work on revaluing the profession to attract young people to the field.
