Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati affirmed his country’s full support for the Palestinian National Authority in light of Israeli attempts to undermine the authority.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed that the Egyptian state will continue its efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and to mobilize international support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which is the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and contiguous Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in addition to granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations.
This came during the meeting between the Egyptian Foreign Minister and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of his participation in the high-level segment meetings of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The official spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs praised the recent adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legal consequences resulting from Israeli practices and policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, a resolution that received broad support from the international community and reflected the extent of support for legitimate Palestinian rights at the international level.”
The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed that “his country will continue to make strenuous efforts to enable the Palestinian Authority to return to assuming the tasks of governance, administration and law enforcement in the Gaza Strip,” referring to “Egyptian moves with regional and international partners that aim to expand recognition of the Palestinian state.”
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the meeting discussed the mediation efforts undertaken by Egypt, Qatar and the United States to reach an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and open all crossings, which would contribute to the flow of humanitarian aid without obstacles.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed his country’s “categorical rejection of any scenarios aimed at continuing the occupation of the Gaza Strip and closing the Rafah crossing, or displacing Palestinians outside their lands, or legitimizing and expanding settlement outposts in the Palestinian territories to impose a fait accompli.”
According to the Foreign Ministry spokesman, the Egyptian minister stressed that “his country does not see an alternative to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to care for Palestinian refugees,” noting the importance of donor countries resuming their financial contributions to the agency.
Abdel-Ati stressed the need to increase humanitarian support provided by the international community to the Gaza Strip, warning against the efforts of some parties to expand the circle of conflict to serve political motives.
