James Earl Jones, Broadway to pay homage to legendary actor by turning off lights

The memory of James Earl Jones will be honored by turning off the lights of Broadway theaters. Known worldwide for his role as the voice of the villain Darth Vader in Star Wars, Jones passed away on September 9 at the age of 93 at his home in Dutchess County, New York.

To pay him due homage, the Broadway theaters will turn off their lights to remember the actor, who in addition to the extensive filmography accumulated over the years, has accumulated a series of notable performances on stage in seventy years of career.

In 2017, James Earl Jones received a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. Five years later, the Cort Theatre, where he debuted in 1958, was renamed James Earl Jones Theatre. Although best known for his film roles, Jones began his Broadway career in 1957 as an understudy in The Egghead, winning his first Tony Award a decade later for The Great With Hope.

He has had many noteworthy theatre performances, including Fences by August Wilson, The Iceman Cometh, Of Mice and Men, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Driving Miss Daisy.
