The Defense Minister also emphasized on ensuring global economic equality by improving the representation of developing countries in international financial institutions. Reviewing the structure of sovereign debt to make it fairer. adoption of a fairer international tax system; and reforming the WTO (World Trade Organization) to serve as a vehicle for expanding exports and growth by giving preferential treatment to developing countries and avoiding new environmental protectionism.

Khawaja Asif said that ‘the United Nations is an indispensable platform to promote and monitor the implementation of these commitments due to its universal membership and mandate.’

He also called for ending the North-South divide and stopping the East-West division of the digital space. “We have to ensure equal data governance,” he said. And we have to control the power of artificial intelligence.’

The defense minister stressed the need to find ways to reduce major power tensions and forge a new consensus to promote general and complete disarmament, including nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and conventional arms control.

Referring to the continued failure of the UN Security Council, the Defense Minister said adding more permanent members as demanded by India and its allies would increase the chances of its paralysis. Instead, the council should be suitably enlarged and made more representative by adding more non-permanent and elected members to the council, he added.

Finally, the defense minister said that the structure of the global system envisaged in the UN Charter should not be eroded by the equality of states with non-state entities. He said that ‘It is only through the decisions and actions of states that we will ensure that future generations can enjoy a future of peace, progress and prosperity.’
