In the Eurobarometer survey published on Tuesday, only 22 percent of Austrian respondents said they supported further expansion of nuclear energy in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Among respondents in all 27 EU member states, 32 percent did so.
“The greenwashing labelling by the EU Commission’s taxonomy has not led to any support for nuclear power. Global nuclear power production has also collapsed to a new negative level in 2023. The share of nuclear power has fallen further to 9.1 percent, as the new World Nuclear Industry Status Report (WNISR) 2024 shows,” says Martin Litschauer, anti-nuclear spokesman for the Greens.
“Even if the Atomic Energy Agency announces that it wants to triple nuclear energy by 20250, that does not change the harsh reality of the unprofitability of new nuclear power plants. France, for example, had to nationalize EDF and still has no plan or law on how to finance the six new nuclear power plants announced. Given the enormous national debt, this will be difficult from the state budget without violating the EU’s debt rules, and private investors for new nuclear power plants can no longer be found in Europe without state subsidies, as the projects in England also show,” Litschauer points out.
“Nuclear power is not green, not CO2 free and not a solution to climate change. The situation in Ukraine and Iran makes this very clear. I also put a collection on the homepage available,” said the Green Party’s anti-nuclear spokesman, Martin Litschauer.
