MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, representative of Pope Francis, will visit Mexico from Thursday, September 19 to Saturday, September 28 with the objective of meeting with agents of the Pastoral of Culture and Education, the Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM) reported yesterday.

At a press conference, Archbishop Alfonso Cortés Contreras, head of the Educational Pastoral Dimension of the Mexican Episcopate, said that, among other things, the Portuguese cardinal seeks to discuss and reflect on education and culture, not only in Mexico, but in society in general.

“We are living in a unique moment that requires us to renew our ways of understanding education and culture,” he said.

It will be in four cities

Monsignor Tolentino de Mendonça will thus tour four archdioceses and four cities in Mexico: Puebla, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The purpose, Monsignor Cortés Contreras added, is to promote dialogue, education and human values “fundamental at a crucial moment for Mexican society.”

In the context of the growing violence in Mexico, religious leaders said they are concerned about the problem and have held days of prayer for peace.

“We believe that through dialogue and education for peace we can offer much more. Dialogue is essential to live in peace, we must listen to everyone, to minorities, and remember that in education for peace, listening is essential,” said Francisco Javier Acero López, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Mexico.

Monsignor Cortés Contreras said that Monsignor Tolentino’s visit will open “spaces for reflection where education and culture become the bridges that unite us and allow us to overcome indifference.”

He also highlighted the crucial moment that we are experiencing as a society and as a Church: “Let us join forces in favour of an educational pact that not only forms people, but also transforms hearts and minds for the good of all.”
