Saudi Arabia stresses need to reform UN system

This came in the Kingdom’s speech at the “Future Summit” held as part of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which was delivered by Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah on behalf of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The Saudi Foreign Minister said: “The urgent need for international institutions to undertake radical reforms is clearly demonstrated by their failure to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine, and their inability to hold the Israeli occupation authorities accountable for their violations.”

Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated that the continued international failures to achieve peace around the world, specifically resolving the conflict in the Middle East, will put the “Charter of the Future” to the test, as security and stability are the solid foundation for any cooperation to achieve development.

He added that Saudi Arabia was keen to participate effectively in the negotiations to draft the “Charter for the Future” out of its belief in what it represents as an opportunity to change our reality for the better, and in emphasis of the importance of developing multilateral action to be more effective and influential in addressing the challenges of the present and the future, in a way that enhances peace and security and supports sustainable development for future generations.

He also stressed the Kingdom’s aspiration for the Charter to constitute a qualitative shift in multilateral action and contribute to establishing contemporary foundations for a fair, just and responsive international system, stimulate the rapid achievement of sustainable development goals, meet the needs of all countries, especially developing countries, encourage bridging the digital divide, and support emerging economies and their role in strengthening the global financial system.

He stressed the Kingdom’s support for the vital role of the United Nations in establishing international rules and norms and promoting collective action.

The United Nations General Assembly had previously adopted a resolution that included a major agreement known as the “Charter for the Future,” which is a call for action and reform to put the world on a better path, during the “Summit for the Future” in New York City.

The “Charter for the Future” includes 56 measures covering several areas, including sustainable development, international peace and security, technology, digital cooperation, and youth, as well as a call for urgent action to address global challenges such as climate change and the digital divide.
