Football, AgCom: Faster Fines of Up to 5,000 Euros for Those Who Watch Pirate Streaming

The Authority’s commissioner, Capitanio: “Piracy Shield works, we are studying extending it to cultural products”

L’AgComthrough the Commissioner’s mouth Massimiliano Capitanioconfirms the validity of the system Privacy Shieldintroduced last February to track down offenders who use pirate streaming to watch sports events, penalizing the rights holders. “We have already blocked over 1,000 domains and 500 IP addresses in the first days of the championship and the number has also grown in the third and fourth days” said Capitanio during a YouTube live broadcast.

But the tool could soon be strengthened, thanks also to a protocol between the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Guardia di Finanza as well as to dialogues with Google and Cloudflare, and there is talk of the possibility of sanctioning not only those who illegally distribute audio-television products but also the final consumers: there could be Faster fines from 150 to 5,000 euros for anyone who uses pirate streaming.

And the discussion could expand beyond sport, given that AgCom is working to extend the use of Privacy Shield also at cultural events such as cultural demonstrations or TV series premieres: “The goal is to include content that has cultural as well as sporting value” concludes Capitanio.
