D. Kreivys: as the Baltic countries withdraw from BRELL, disinformation will increase Business

“We are approaching a very important date, we are approaching February 8 of next year, when desynchronization from Russian networks and connection with European networks will be carried out. I think our aggressive neighbor (Russia – BNS) really doesn’t like it,” D. Kreivys told LRT radio on Thursday.

He noted that the information attack that appeared recently, that electricity in the Baltic countries is the most expensive in Europe, is not an isolated case. Recently, false information was also spread in Latvia about alleged power outages, which in fact do not exist.

“This weekend there was a test in Kaliningrad, the Russians are also preparing their enclave to operate in island mode and a massive attack was carried out in Latvia when people received a message on their Whatsapp messenger’iusthat Latvia is in danger of that day blackout’as (universal blackout – BNS): “take care of water, take care of various means, because you will not have electricity for a long time”. This shows that it is not only this case, but there are more cases and they are all coordinated,” said the Minister of Energy.

“I think we will have more and more of them (disinformation attacks – BNS) before synchronization. We have to be resistant to this misinformation,” emphasized D. Kreivys.

Over the weekend, false information spread in the public, that electricity in the Baltic countries is the most expensive in Europe. However, on Monday, the Lithuanian Energy Agency (LEA) denied this news, citing data that show that this year the highest wholesale electricity prices are in Italy, Ireland and Greece, and the lowest in Finland and Sweden. LEA also indicated that the average price of wholesale electricity in Lithuania is lower than last year and corresponds to the average level of European Union countries.

In July, Lithuanian operator Litgrid, Latvian AST and Estonian Elering sent notices to Russian and Belarusian operators about the non-renewal of the joint BRELL contract with these countries and the withdrawal from it in February 2025.

It is planned that the networks of the Baltic countries will start operating synchronously with the networks of continental Europe on February 9 next year. The day before – February 8 – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will disconnect from the Russian IPS/UPS system and perform the only joint test of isolated work, after which there will be no return to the old system.

Synchronization will take place through the LitPol Link connection between Lithuania and Poland, which will be expanded in 2021.

Until now, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, together with Russia and Belarus, operate in the IPS/UPS system, where the electricity frequency is centrally regulated in Russia
