Dennis Schouten in ‘De Kist’: ‘I was treated like a total idiot’

Trigger warning: this article is about suicidal thoughts and suicide.

Dennis Schouten in ‘The Coffin’

Schouten is not afraid of death. He even finds it comforting to think that he could end it himself one day. “I told my sister first. She became emotional, but there was understanding. If you suddenly say this, it is no longer yours. I immediately felt a sense of relief. I told several people after that.”

The presenter has been struggling with life for years. “On paper, I have a really good life, but in practice I rarely feel happy. Feelings of emptiness, loneliness and unrest prevail. In recent years, these negative thoughts, which cost a lot of energy, have worsened.”

Few good days

In The Chest he explains himself further. “I often wake up with tension. The feeling I have almost every day is like sitting in the dentist’s waiting room, waiting for a root canal. That feeling cannot be tempered. A day like that is just exhausting.”
