Otani, 2 home runs left for ’55 home runs-55 stolen bases’ | Dong-A Ilbo

Added 2 steals and 1 home run against Colorado
Asian player also breaks season record for most goals scored

Shohei Ohtani of the LA Dodgers hits a solo home run to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th inning against Colorado on the 23rd. Ohtani, who added two stolen bases on the day, recorded 53 home runs and 55 stolen bases for the season. Los Angeles=AP Newsis Shohei Ohtani (LA Dodgers), the first “superstar” to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season in Major League Baseball (MLB) history, surpassed Ichiro Suzuki’s (51, retired) record for most runs scored by an Asian MLB player in a single season.

Ohtani started as the designated hitter in the home game against Colorado on the 23rd and had 4 hits, 1 RBI, 2 runs, and 2 stolen bases in 5 at-bats. In the bottom of the 9th inning, when the Dodgers were down 4-5, Ohtani hit a game-tying solo home run over the right-center field fence in his last at-bat. In the 3rd inning, he hit a single and stole second base, and in the 7th inning, he reached first base with a single and stole second base. Ohtani hit a home run and stole two bases that day, recording 53 home runs and 55 stolen bases for the season. With the Dodgers having 6 games left in the regular season, Ohtani is only 2 home runs away from his ’55 home runs and 55 stolen bases’.

Ohtani scored on Freddie Freeman’s RBI single in the seventh to tie Ichiro’s 2001 record for most runs by an Asian player in a season (127), then surpassed Ichiro with a solo home run in the ninth to give him his 128th run of the season.

With 55 stolen bases this season, Ohtani is now one closer to Ichiro’s record for most stolen bases in a season (56) set in 2001 by an Asian player. If he continues his current pace, Ohtani will likely easily surpass Ichiro’s stolen base record. Ohtani has attempted 59 stolen bases this season and succeeded in 55 of them. His stolen base success rate is 93.2%, the highest among the five players who have stolen 40 or more bases in both MLB leagues. Ohtani, who hit 4 hits on the day, has risen to a batting average of .301.

The Dodgers won the game 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning after Mookie Betts hit a walk-off home run.
