Specialist doctors concerned about the effectiveness of Santé Québec

Specialist physicians hope that Santé Québec will bring more efficiency to the health network, stressed the president of the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) at the end of a meeting with Premier François Legault.

Federation President Dr. Vincent Oliva spoke for the first time with Mr. Legault for more than an hour on Monday morning.

“We are concerned about the role that Santé Québec will play. We are not cynical and we are not saying that this will add a layer of bureaucracy, but we hope that Santé Québec will bring a new perspective with a vision of efficiency that the network needs,” he stressed.

The FMSQ agreement with Quebec, which was worth around $7 billion, ended on April 1, 2023.

Specialist doctors are calling for greater efficiency in patient care in the field of surgery and for the waiting list to be reduced. However, they are not against the budgetary rigour that the government seems to want to impose, under certain conditions.

“Budgetary rigor, I think it’s good, we don’t want to throw taxpayers’ money out the window. On the other hand, the government must keep some room for maneuver so that medicine continues to evolve,” said Dr. Oliva.

Let us recall that negotiations with the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) are still at a standstill, while the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec (FIQ) must present the conciliator’s offer to its members in October.

“The government has the burden of arriving at a model that delivers the goods in terms of services to the population while things are deteriorating at the moment,” stressed PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.
