384 dead from typhoon Yagi

Typhoon Yagi swept through Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar more than a week ago, causing floods and landslides that killed hundreds in the four states.

In Myanmar in particular, the blow has been hard for populations already displaced and vulnerable due to the civil war that has plunged the country into chaos since the generals’ coup on February 1, 2021.

Last weekend, the military junta asked for international help to deal with the disaster — an extremely rare occurrence.

According to UN calculations, those affected by the passage of the typhoon from Myanmar now reach 887,000.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stressed that “the worst-affected areas” are facing “wide-scale destruction of homes, goods, water sources and electricity network infrastructure”.

“Roads, bridges, communication networks, schools, public services, places of worship, crops and agricultural land were severely damaged or completely destroyed,” OCHA added.
