It prohibits new hotels from being built

Amsterdam places strict restrictions on the construction of new hotels, with the aim of dealing with the phenomenon of mass tourism.

“We want to make and keep the city sustainable for residents and visitors. This means: no over-tourism, no new hotels and no more than 20 million overnight stays in hotels by tourists per year,” reads a statement.

A new hotel in Amsterdam can only be built if another hotel closes, if the number of beds is not increased and if the new hotel will be better, for example more sustainable. However, the rule does not apply to new hotels that have already secured a license.

The city actively tries to limit the number of tourists, which number in the millions annually, mainly by discouraging sex and drug tourism in the red light district.

Measures to limit the number of tourists were put in place by Amsterdam

This is the last of a series of measures taken by Dutch capital to mitigate the issue of over-tourism in the city.

Last year, Amsterdam’s city council voted to ban cruise ships and close the cruise terminal.

With information from iefimerida, the city also banned the use of marijuana on public streets in the red-light district and ended tours passing through the windows of sex workers.

According to a 2021 decree called “Amsterdam Tourism in Balance”, the city council is “obliged to intervene” when the number of tourists reaches 18 million people.
