Something terrible must have happened in a bar on Langenbochumer Strasse: a 39-year-old from Herten had to go to hospital after midnight on Sunday, police and prosecutors said. He was seriously injured in an attack with a knife.

The man is said to have previously got into an argument with a 65-year-old, also from Herten. The two initially spent Sunday evening together in the pub. At around 12:55 a.m. one word led to another, after which the 65-year-old grabbed a knife and attacked the younger man. The 39-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Homicide squad established

The police arrested the 65-year-old as a prime suspect and have also set up a homicide squad due to the severity of his injuries. Further investigations into the knife attack are ongoing.

In recent weeks, there have been several knife attacks in the area, including in Recklinghausen and Dorsten. According to crime statistics for North Rhine-Westphalia, 15 people died in knife attacks last year, with the crimes occurring disproportionately often at weekends and in the late evening hours. State Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) recently presented a ten-point plan to combat knife violence.
