ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz has withdrawn from the Cycling World Cup in Switzerland due to a family emergency.

Carapaz, the top climber at this year’s Tour de France, reported Monday that he had to travel to Ecuador to be with his daughter who underwent emergency surgery.

“For the past few hours, I have been forced to make an emergency trip to Ecuador to be with my daughter, who had to undergo emergency surgery,” Carapaz said in a statement. “Fortunately, the surgery went well. However, Still need to be careful.

“Due to a family emergency, I have been unable to train for several days and my physical and mental condition are not at the level they should be in Ecuador. Therefore, I have decided not to participate in the 2024 World Cup in Zurich.

The men’s road race kicks off the world championships on Sunday.

Carapaz, 31, won the road race at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics but was not selected to defend her equestrian title in Paris this summer.

He was the first Ecuadorian to win the 2019 Giro d’Italia, and he has won stages in the Vuelta a España, Vuelta a España and Tour de France.
