Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc (born 2006, Ca Mau) was the valedictorian of his English major at Phan Ngoc Hien High School.

During his 12 years in high school, 10X won a series of titles, including runner-up in the National English Speech Contest and a bronze medal in the 30/4 Olympic English Competition. In addition, Bao Ngoc also owns more than 30 certificates from the above-mentioned reputable centers of foreign languages around the world.

In the recent high school graduation exams, female students continued to improve their academic skills by entering two major universities, the Diplomatic School and the Foreign Trade University in Hanoi.

Despite all her impressive achievements, few people know that Bao Ngoc was once a young girl with low self-esteem and a poor command of foreign languages.

Winning over yourself

Since he was a child, Bao Ngoc has always received support from his mother in his studies. His mother often accompanies him in most subjects except English. However, unlike many of his classmates, Bao Ngoc did not have the path to study science, so he knew almost nothing about this foreign language until he was in the sixth grade.

“Every time I go to a foreign language class I feel so scared and I can barely understand anything.”said the female student.

By the end of grade 6, Bao Ngoc had achieved sixth place in most subjects, but his English grades were not as good as he had hoped. He realized that his mindset of learning to cope was not helping him progress, and what a friend at his table said to him at the time: “I can’t do anything without you” 10X gained momentum. Since then, the female student’s journey to master English has begun.

Outside class hours, Bao Ngoc attends courses at the center and goes home to study and practice on her own. She spends up to 6 hours a day learning English. During the 1-year preparation period, the female student solved about 300 exam questions. Just 6 years later, Bao Ngoc has erased her roots by studying the entire English grammar program from grade 1 to grade 12.

In the summer of her seventh grade, 10X was selected to participate in an exchange program in the United States. On that trip, she passed her English exam with honors and received a scholarship to Balboa High School (USA). However, due to the complicated situation caused by COVID-19 at the time, the girl had to return to her home country to study online.

Studying simultaneously in two schools, one in Vietnam and one in the United States, is a process of perseverance and tireless effort for Bao Ngoc. The school has 2 classes a day, the lights stay on in the girls’ room at night when the rest of the family is asleep, and she participates in online learning with teachers from Balboa High School. Needless to say, the studies of the school’s talented team of students and the schedule of extra classes at the center keep 10X constantly overloaded.

“On busy days with a tight school schedule, I would just drink milk tea to calm my mind. Looking back at those days, I feel like I was ‘abusing’ myself.Bao Ngoc said.

Teach English for Free

In addition to her excellent academic performance, Bao Ngoc is also a talented girl and participates in many extracurricular activities and sports of the Ca Mau Youth Union… Among them, the outstanding project is “English – It’s Here. The Origin of English is Here” founded by female students.

“Recognizing the importance of English in the current era of international integration, I look forward to sharing my accumulated knowledge with you and working together to improve your English skills.” Speaking, 10X Ca Mau said the project was established to support students who want to learn English but do not have free means.

Formally established in early 2022, the project will begin holding online classes one to two sessions a week (each session lasting two hours) to solidify students’ knowledge according to lesson plans created by Bao Ngoc.

Her online classes sometimes attract up to 500 students, including those from all over Vietnam, but also Japan and South Korea. In addition, Bao Ngoc has also set up three in-person classes in Ca Mau for students in difficult situations, all taught free of charge by 10X.

According to the female student, the good news is that learners’ English communication skills are obviously improving through each course. Seeing the results, many students and parents have encouraged more people to enroll. The number of students continues to increase gradually.

The “My Lover” project not only provides free classes, but also develops a scholarship fund to support students’ progress as they attend classes. All funds for the scholarship fund, from prize money, overtime pay, and personal lucky money donations, are raised by Bao Ngoc.

“We refuse to accept donations because this is a non-profit project and we don’t want to lose its original nature and mission. The more people I help, the happier I am and the more meaningful life feels to me.”said the female student.

For his continuous contributions to the community, Mr. Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc was honored to be awarded the “Youth of Beautiful Living Award” by the Central Vietnam Youth Union and selected as one of the representative figures nationwide who follow the words of Uncle Ho in the 20th year of the National Day.

“This is a quote I really like, and it’s been my life motto to this day: ‘A beautiful flower should not only beautify itself, but also the whole flower field.’ If we had more beautiful flowers, our country would be more developed, more civilized, and more progressive.”Bao Ngoc hopes that this spirit of community responsibility can be further spread among today’s younger generation.

Studying at two universities in Hanoi in parallel will keep Bao Ngoc even busier in the future, but 10X vows to continue his projects and volunteer work, living and devoting himself to his motherland.
